Services for Immigrants in S.D.G & P.R
The region currently has only two groups that provide supports specifically for the immigrant population: T.R. Leger Immigrant Services and Le Réseau de soutien à l’immigration francophone.
T.R. Leger provides direct settlement services in both official languages and has a main site and resource centre in Cornwall, with part time satellite centres in Hawkesbury and Alexandria (and settlement service access through the TRL campuses in Morrisburg, Winchester, Casselman and Rockland). These sites offer access to a complete range of settlement services including; settlement planning with a Settlement Outreach Worker and ongoing settlement assistance, referrals, access to computer/fax/internet, community resources, citizenship information/sessions, job search workshops, Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (English as a second language- Cornwall only), Canadian Language Benchmark assessment in English, mentoring, group activities, welcome workshops.
The Réseau de soutien à l’immigration francophone operates in Cornwall, and supports francophone immigration but does not provide any settlement services.
Complimenting these settlement agencies, there are Employment Ontario offices, housing supports, social services, healthcare services and many others who assist with the integration of newcomers. Due to the large geographic region and largely rural setting, it is often challenging for immigrants to readily access appropriate services.
Strengthening the collaboration between these many agencies will be necessary to provide as seamless an integration process as possible in a non-urban setting.
